Simulation with Numerical Code-MACH2
A state of the art numerical code called MACH2 is used to model the dynamics of staged Z-pinch, which incorporate most of the important physics related features. This code has the following characteristics:
- Simulation code is based on 2&1/2 dimensional, time-dependent, single fluid, Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model.
- The code is used in Eulerian mode.
- External capacitor bank circuit is also modeled.
- Tabular (SESAME) equations of state is used to model the extreme physicsl conditions.
- Implicit MHD with all three components of magnetic field B and fluid velocity U.
- The code is studies a Multi-species plasma with radiative liner and hot target plasma .
- The code also has Flux-limited, single group, implicit radiation diffusion model.
Below are the results for 2 MJ class machine like Sandia Z-facility.
- Evolution of Plasma Density During Implosion
- This video shows the implosion of ion density in a staged Z-pinch towards the last 12 nano-second of a 112 nanoseconds of total implosion time. Stable shock compression of the target plasma is quite visible throughout implosion phase.
- Evolution of Plasma Temperature During implosion
- This video shows the implosion of ion temperature in a staged Z-pinch towards the last 12 nano-second of a 112 nanoseconds of total implosion time. Stable heating of the target plasma develops as the implosion proceeds.
